** Update - Reade this post first **

According to an anouncement from 3 (UK) made on 2 August 2010 the shiny not-so-new Android 2.1 update should arrive at the end of this week for the HTC Hero. 3 (UK) have submitted the update to Google for a final review and expecting a word back soon. As they have stated eariler there will only be a single OTA package which will update the phone to 2.1.

*Update* 11/08/2010

"@ all – We are hoping to have the 2.1 update by next week, sorry we can’t be more specific but it’s important that we get this right. Thanks all for your patience."

Here is the full anouncement from the 3 blog:

“Hi Guys

Thanks for all your patience regarding the 2.1 update for HTC Hero. We have now tested and approved the software and this has been submitted to Google to get the final go-ahead. We’re hoping that they can push this through as quickly as possible, but we’re not clear on the timescales for this yet.

Really sorry for the delay on this update. We’ve been working really hard to approve and launch lots of handsets and updates this month including iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S, and the 2.1 update for Hero has had to queue up alongside these other big launches, particularly the Galaxy S which took a number of versions of software to get right. We’re a smaller network than some of our competitors, and while that has its advantages it also means that our testing team doesn’t have limitless resources. We’ve done our best to manage priorities, but the 2.1 Hero update hasn’t gone through testing and approvals as quickly or as smoothly as we’d have wanted – HTC did have to supply us with a couple of versions until we were satisfied it was bug free. We really wanted to get this to you for the end of July, but we’ve missed our deadline – I’m really sorry I can’t bring you better news on a Friday afternoon but at least you’re now in full possession of the facts.

As soon as we know more from Google on their timescales we’ll let you know.”

If I'd held my breath for

If I'd held my breath for this update I'd be dead.

I do like the excuse of "people who aren't customers are more important than the ones we already snagged therefore we need to focus on launching more products to snare people in rather than be nice to the ones we've already caught."

I guess that's the beauty of a 24 month contract for these people, you can snag and forget and if they complain, you still have them for 2 years.

Through this whole shambolic event, I've personally pretty much given up on 3 and their ability to deal with existing customers with anything resembling decency. It's a pity as they seem to have all the building blocks - minus customer service - of being a decent provider.

Also, I like how the Hero is considered a legacy model now, but if you pop into a 3 shop to buy one contract-free it's more than an iPhone!
